Chapter 5
Hard Drive Settings
Interface
Connections
Please consult Chapter Two "Hard Disk Interfaces" for specific details on
connectors for IDE and SCSI interfaces.
Default Jumper
Settings
The default or most common jumper positions are indicated by the
symbol. Pin 1 and jumper 1 are indicated by an arrowhead symbol
(
).
Jumper Types
See Figure 5-1 for examples of common devices used to change the hardware
configuration of hard drives.

Figure Chapter 5-1: Common Jumper Types
Non-Documented
Jumpers
Some jumper settings are specified as "unidentified", "factory configured
– do not alter", or may have a dash. Information was not available on
these jumpers or settings. These jumpers may be used by the factory for
diagnostic or low-level purposes, and should be left as received out of the
box. Also, some connection points for test equipment look like jumpers. In
most cases, the diagrams do not show these test points.
Typical Jumpered
Options
Most of the jumper settings in this chapter are self-explanatory. The most
important hardware option to set will be Drive Select (SCSI, ESDI, ST-506/412),
or Master/Slave (IDE).
Selected Drive
Settings
Jumper settings and diagrams for the industry's most popular hard drives
are provided in this chapter. The drives are listed in alphabetical order by
manufacturer.
The diagrams only reflect the important access points and are not shown in
fine detail. Some terminator resistor packs and jumper block locations change
from one Printed Circuit Board (PCB) revision to another, but the functions of
each remain the same.
